Authenticity in a Community Setting

9/26/2013

BY DIONAZO PIZAÑA

Trust

“It must be a mutually defined relational principle that needs continuous work and updating”

It is nothing something that happens once, and trust is established, but something that needs constant revisiting, as people, spaces, situations change.

“active listening that is focused on understanding others’ realities and holding those differing realities as relevant as my own”

Active listening, reflecting and pondering as people share.  Even listening when not physically present. Continuously expanding ideas and dialogue.  Expading our wondering and conciousness.

Sustainability

“whether or not it is maintained over time and leads to other opportunities that capitalize on each other’s assets and strengthen the alliance”

My problem with campaign work that NGO’s do.  It’s a one time relationship with people. But oh wait!  We didn’t get ____ grant,  so theres no way we can work with you, sorry!  We’ll care about “your cause” when we get funding.

Community In-Reach Instead of Community Out-Reach

  • community out-reach: savior mentality, has dominant knowledge, knows “best”, funding sources
  • community in-reach can be said that it starts talking what assets does the community have, what does the whole group bring? humble, patient, open to learning, building

Authentic Relationships

based on trust, honesty, genuineness, responsibility to each other, willingness to be open and humble, willingness to take risks, and the understanding that tension in the relationship is a necessary component that will lead to growth.

Authenticity, vulnerability, working through our own issues, admitting to faults & working from there, together.
