STITCH Summer Open Mic Series
STITCH began as a summer open mic series in 2009. Out of a conversation on the lack of positive, accessible space for our young people during the summer, STITCH was born between three good friends, all Milwaukee raised. These friends, Alida, Jeanette, and Tony thought, "Hey, if we don't see it, why not create it." And so they did, and it was called STITCH. |
|
Milwaukee has been consistently ranked among the top racially segregated cities in the nation. STITCH chooses to address this truth by rotating two new venues each summer on different sides of Milwaukee. Essentially, we seek spaces and then create movement between them each summer; we call it the "STITCH tradition". |
For some folks STITCH is a reason to go to the "other" side of town. The very name of STITCH is the action we seek for our city and our people; to heal our broken and hold each other; to share our stories and realize our strength, our power as a people. |
IntenciON
As an intentional space for our young people to be creative in, STITCH has always featured other young artists, from Milwaukee to the Midwest and beyond. Our open mics are hosted by STITCH familia and provide folks the opportunity to get experience MCing. Artistic features vary from dance, spoken word, visual art, and music; |
each week there is a fresh, new feature. Since 2009, STITCH has sought to give our young people the space to take ourselves serious; whether hosting, featuring, or sharing in front of the crowd. STITCH through storytelling and genuine interaction, we engage folks to access their humanity and build with others through that. |
